Head of Sustainability
I joined BMT Cordah as Head of Sustainability in January 2008 and in 2009 moved across to BMT Group. My job involves advising BMT's companies and customers on sustainability issues and co-ordinating the group's corporate sustainability strategy.
What really excites me about this job is the scope and scale of BMT's operations, and the opportunity this provides to have a major, positive global impact in the work we do. Our engagement with high-impact sectors such as oil, gas and shipping means that we are addressing some of the biggest sustainability issues head-on. And unlike other consultancies, we offer more than strategy development; we combine strategic expertise with highly advanced technical capabilities. This means we can advise people on sustainability, helping to devise strategies, management systems and so forth, but we can also plan and implement technical solutions.
For example, we have worked with a global passenger shipping brand, engaging them with the climate change agenda focusing on how it will affect their business. However, given our technical expertise, we have also been able to talk to them about technological solutions such as ship engines, and exhaust scrubbers that can minimise their environmental impact. It is a totally unique, holistic offer, and our focus on the maritime industry means that we really can claim to be the best in the world at what we do.
I am also responsible for BMT Giveback, our group-wide philanthropic initiative. Our first project has been to design and construct a sewerage system for a rural Indian village which will dramatically improve the quality of life for 2,500 people. It has been a tremendously rewarding project to be involved with.
Another element of my role is in training and facilitation. This is something I have always loved doing and it is great to have the opportunity to maintain and develop my skills in this area working on anything from workshops on innovation to training courses in senior leadership and project management.
